When I was studying Interior Design and Interior Styling, we often had to draw up room plans and then subsequently have to go and change a lot of it around. Instead of doing paper drawings, I used free online interior design room planning tools. At the time, I didn’t use a paid version as I wasn’t sure which software I enjoyed using. I kept a list of the software that I tried and I urge you to take a look at each one and decide for yourself which one you prefer to use.

It’s great fun putting a room together using the free floor plan software. Some of this interior design software even gives you 3D renderings which are great for you to be able to see what the room will actually look like from all angles.
These tools are great to practice your design and styling skills, you can’t make a mistake here. You can really try out all your ideas before you commit to them in real life.
1. SketchUp
SketchUp is an extremely popular 3d modelling software, and one that I use a lot too. It is used a lot for interior design. There is a free and paid for version. Whilst this isn’t the simplest piece of software to use, there are lots of tutorials to help you get started, but I particularly like the online course from Rebecca Robeson, Design Your Room Using SketchUp, it’s very reasonable at £15 and packed with easy to understand information. I would recommend taking this online course to help you quickly get started with using Sketchup for your Interior Design projects.
2. Floorplanner
Using Floorplanner is one of the easiest and best-looking ways to create and share interactive floorplans online. This tool comes with a lot of options for your to customise your plans. With Floorplanner you can recreate your home, garden or office in just a few clicks and furnish your plans with their large library of objects.
3. Autodesk Homestyler
Autodesk Homestyler is an easy to use free drag and drop room planner tool that allows you to easily create floor plans, plus add decorating ideas too. There is also a library of other designers designs for you to go through and get inspiration from.
4. IKEA
The Swedish design giant offers a planning tool that’s so simple to use, and you can also use their furniture in the space to see whether that sofa that you love fits into the space. They have planners that cover, kitchens, wardrobes, living rooms and offices.
5. HomeBase
Back here in the UK, Homebase offers a similar online interior design planning tool, in addition to the planner they also have a range of calculators to help you determine how much paint you need, flooring, wallpaper, tiling etc.
And here’s 1 more…6. Magnet
If you are looking to design your kitchen, then Magnet is the tool for you. Specifically focused on kitchens, you can start from scratch using a completely empty room, or choose a pre-designed room from our set of templates or saved designs. When you’ve got your space, start to fill it with your favourite kitchen cabinets, worktops and accessories. You can even go so far as to add lighting, chairs and plants to your kitchen to make it as real as possible.
